My state, like too many in America, has squandered precious time and taxpayer dollars lobbying for legislation that will probably get shot down in court, frittering away even more taxpayer dollars. The attempts to wrest power from the people and even from the Republican Governor are astoundingly bold and uninformed.
Much hand-wringing went into attempts to starve the Idaho education budget—which already ranks dead last in the country for per-student education funding—as means of controlling curriculum in elementary, secondary, and college-level institutions and punishing administrators who step out of the narrow line of what is considered appropriate to teach.
From an April 8th, 2021 press release from the office of Lt. Governor (emphasis my own): Idaho Lt. Governor Janice McGeachin is working on putting together a task force to examine indoctrination in Idaho education and to protect our young people from the scourge of critical race theory, socialism, communism, and Marxism.
Ms. McGeachin, how do young people learn about the world we are part of? Socialism, Communism, and forms of Marxism exist in the world outside our state. How will your child and its cohorts, deprived of academic exploration of history and philosophy, govern when you are an old lady staring out the window of your nursing home? Are you worried that your toddler will grow up to learn about your legislative response to systemic racism, therefore you wish to keep your child in the dark? (No pun intended.)
Representative Priscilla Giddings wanted to defund Idaho Public Television, which serves as an educational link and informational lifeline to far-flung parts of this large state. As reported in the Idaho Press by Betsy Z. Russel, Ms. Giddings argues that “Other language included (in IDPTV programing) really highlights critical race theory and that is also concerning for me as a mother. I don’t think this partisan and inappropriate content should be available and viewed by my two-and-a-half-year-old. I don’t think she should be seeing stuff where just discriminates against her and doesn’t encourage her to be the best that she can be.” (Again, emphasis my own.)
First of all, Ms. Giddings, not everything on any TV, Social Media channel, or bookshelf is appropriate for a two-and-a-half-year-old! That is why you, my friend, have control of said media and you set the rules in your house. Secondly, if you don’t like IPTV, you don’t have to watch it. For many of your constituents it is a cost-free lifeline to culture, education, and classic films, to say nothing of live coverage of the statehouse circus.
Ms. Giddings later plumbed deeper into the sewer when she harassed and publicly revealed the name of a student statehouse staffer who had accused another lawmaker of rape.
These astute ladies are fully supported by the likes of Christ follower, Husband, Daddy, Candidate for Idaho State Superintendent, Branden Durst, who confuses feminism with the outing of young women who report rape, and who seeks to limit executive powers of the GOP Governor, and who supports denying legislative referendum process of state citizens, and who confuses public health regulations with assaults on personal freedoms. There is so little analysis, logic, or reason coming from these public officials it makes my head spin.
I can only assume that the level of intelligent analysis displayed by Idaho’s most recent legislative session is a measure of what we can expect when we fail to teach Critical Analysis Theory, and when a group of unschooled minds controls statewide curriculum. This is how governments disintegrate. An uneducated public can be easily led to slaughter.
